Orofacial Pain Insider: Abusive childhood may be linked to TMD development

Patients who experience maltreatment during childhood may experience psychological deterioration that can lead to the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), according to a study published on October 13 in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In other news, the use of the articaine has expanded among dentists in the U.S. despite concerns about the risk of paresthesia associated with the anesthetic. The study was published recently in the Journal of the American Dental Association.

On the topic of anesthesia, a recently published abstract suggested that anesthesia medication dosage requirements may not need to be adjusted for regular marijuana users undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Did you know that bone marrow aspirate concentrate may reverse the degenerative effects of osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint? Patients treated with BMAC, a procedure in which a person’s own bone marrow is injected into a site of pain or injury, showed long-term joint repair after more than a year.

Additionally, researchers in Norway are trying to develop a better way to treat burning mouth syndrome by creating a carrier that keeps the active ingredient in chili peppers in the oral cavity longer.
