A 17-year-old Florida boy sustained brain damage and underwent cardiopulmonary arrest during the administration of anesthesia for surgery to remove his third molars, according to a medical examiner's report. He later died after being in a coma.
Steven Baxter, DDS, performed oral surgery on Christopher Power on April 22, 2016, at Kissimmee Family Dentistry in Celebration, FL, according to a WFTV story.
Power was given 10 mg of midazolam, or Versed, and 50 mg of Demerol to put him under conscious sedation, according to the report. He was taken to the Osceola Regional Medical Center and later to Nemours Children's Hospital. He was in a coma for two days before his parents decided to remove him from life support.
