Ky. start-up wins $10K for new root canal tool

A Kentucky dental technology company founded in 2010 by three young entrepreneurs has won a statewide business idea competition sponsored by Kentucky Highlands Investment.

Inven, which has developed an endodontic file designed to save time and lower risks associated with root canals, won $10,000 and free office space for a year in Kentucky Highlands' new business accelerator in London, KY, the company announced.

The patent-pending Intellidontic file features a marker that enables the user to set and retain an ideal working length throughout a root canal procedure, Inven explains on its website. The company claims it is the only endodontic file with the proprietary rigid marker to prevent perforation of the apex of the canal, as well as the only file with an integrated graduated measurement scale for measuring length of the file itself.

The company's three founders -- Alex Frommeyer, Dan Dykes, and Alex Curry -- are graduates of the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering, and all are younger than age 25.

"Our end goal is to help dental professionals more efficiently and effectively perform root canals on patients," said Frommeyer, Inven CEO.

Eligible participants in the competition were entrepreneurs, new businesses, or existing businesses with 20 or fewer employees who demonstrated an idea to create jobs in Kentucky.
