The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has been awarded a $400,000 grant to support a teledentistry project benefiting people with developmental disabilities.
The grant was provided by the North Bay Regional Center (NBRC), a nonprofit organization that assists people with developmental disabilities in several Northern California counties. The Pacific Center for Special Care at the University of the Pacific will use the funds for diagnostic and preventive care through its virtual dental home system, which allows a dentist to remotely screen patients.
NBRC hopes the system will increase preventive care, thereby reducing the number of people with developmental disabilities who need complex dental work, often under sedation or general anesthesia.
