The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence are offering a tobacco treatment certification to medical professionals, including dentists.
The certification aims to establish a training standard for healthcare providers delivering tobacco cessation care, according to a press release dated December 7 from the AHA.
“This new certification gives individual health care providers the opportunity to show their commitment to improving their patients’ quality and length of life through evidence-based tobacco cessation therapies,” Dr. Rose Marie Robertson, deputy chief science officer of the AHA and co-director of the association’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science, said in the release.
The certification process includes live remote proctoring for assessments, a certification award, and renewal through AHA platforms. Additionally, individuals can display a personalized certificate award and credentials, which is valid for three years.
Financial support for the certification program is being funded by Louisiana-based healthcare services provider Ochsner Health.
