Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president of the U.S., and to this day he is the only person who has served two discontinuous terms in the Oval Office. He was also the first president to have his wedding ceremony inside the White House. That wedding, by the way, was to his 21-year-old ward, making her the youngest first lady in the nation's history. Cleveland also presided over the dedication of the Statue of Liberty.
Even though Cleveland may not be the first name that pops into your head when you're discussing presidential lore, there are a few things that stand out about him. For example, he also headed out to sea to have secret surgery to remove oral cancer.
The lengths that Cleveland went to in order to cover up his cancer before and after his surgery are fascinating. The procedure that took place on the boat to remove part of his jaw and the oral cancer in around 90 minutes is equally fascinating.
Matthew Algeo dove into the history surrounding this incredible tale: In The President is a Sick Man, he details Cleveland's bout with cancer. He joined me for the most recent episode of the Dental Assistant Nation podcast series, powered by IgniteDA. In our talk, he discussed not only Cleveland's quest to have the cancer removed but also what it took to perform the operation and cover it up for years.
You can listen to our podcast below. Additionally, if you'd ever like to see the mass removed from Cleveland's mouth, it is on display at the MĂĽtter Museum in Philadelphia.
