Time runs out for Calif. kids' program; oral cancer takes financial toll

After providing preventive dental care to thousands of low-income children in Los Angeles for the past three years, the Center for Oral Health's WIC Dental Collaborative Project will end in June due to a lack of funding.

The Southern California program's demise will be a great loss to the community it serves, according to its supporters who contend that the low-cost program has been one of the most successful prevention strategies they have seen. Read more in this latest Practice Management Community feature.

Meanwhile, a study released last week by the Delta Dental of Michigan's Research and Data Institute found that the cost burden of treating individuals with oral, orapharyngeal, and salivary gland cancer is significant and extends well beyond the course of treatment itself.
