Infection Control Insider: 8 tips for pediatric dentistry success in the wake of COVID-19

Dear Infection Control Insider,

Oh, how our industry has changed in the span of a few short weeks. Much of those changes in dentistry have revolved around infection control procedures and protocols and discussions of how we keep our patients and teams safe.

And those changes have affected patients of all ages, including your youngest ones and their parents or guardians.

In our latest Insider Exclusive, Dr. Catalina Botero shares her tips on how explaining personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control protocols can help ease the minds of pediatric patients and the adults who come with them to the practice. It's a new world for dental patients, and these tips should help ensure your youngest patients are ready for their visit with all of the new infection control efforts in place.

Also in our Infection Control Community, painful ulcers in the oral cavity may be linked to SARS-CoV-2 infection, which causes COVID-19, according to a recently published article. This is thought to be the first reported case of oral lesions being a possible symptom of COVID-19, the study authors noted.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released some important guidance that affects every dental practice. In a podcast, we got the answers to important questions about this guidance from dental infection control expert Mary Govoni.

Finally, a recent survey of 300 dental practices across the U.S. by the Willeford Group revealed some surprising findings regarding PPE usage and preparedness, as well as what comes next for many dental practices as they continue to move forward after reopening.

Thank you for being an Infection Control Insider! We wish you and your team continued success on the infection control front.
