Week in Review: An open letter to Dr. Fauci from a hygienist | Aerosols and infection control in the dental practice | Antiviral oral spray slows COVID-19?

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Did you ever have one of those moments when you wondered if now was the right time to say what's been in your heart for a while? Well, that moment was earlier this week for Amanda Hill, RDH, BSDH, when Dr. Anthony Fauci mentioned something that piqued her interest in one of his moments with the media. She decided to write an open letter to Dr. Fauci and share why she thinks what is going on right now in our world could be the start of a closer relationship between the medical and dental fields. It's been a big hit on social media, and I think you might like to read what she has to say as well.

Aerosol spray in the dental practice is a hot topic right now. With that in mind, I was honored to join our clinical editor, Dr. David Rice, on a Zoom interview with infection control thought leader Leslie Canham. We discussed what can be done about reducing aerosol spray in the practice and what infection control might look like when your full patient load returns.

The video we shot with Leslie is just one in a series where we bring experts from across the dental industry to talk about the subjects that matter the most to you and your dental colleagues right now. These interviews are all on a single page and cover a wide range of topics, including everything from infection control to business tips and communication skills. We are adding a new video to the series every weekday, so check the page to see what we've been talking about this week.

Elsewhere, University Hospitals in Cleveland reportedly will begin a clinical trial that investigates whether an over-the-counter antiviral oral spray can prevent the airborne transmission of COVID-19 to front-line healthcare workers.

Also in the COVID-19 category, one of our most popular articles this week was from Dr. Tony Stefanou, who discussed what the pandemic has potentially done to the value of a dental practice. I have seen questions about this topic raised in some dental forums, and I was very glad to have Dr. Stefanou write the article and share his thoughts with you.

Speaking of Dr. Stefanou, if you have some free time this weekend (and most of us do, right?), be sure to check out the TriviaDent Facebook page that he and his team have created. There are some great dental trivia questions being posted on there.

Finally, I know that continuing education (CE) is a big concern and must for many dental professionals right now. I'm glad that DrBicuspid.com and Johns Hopkins are partnering on the Business of Dentistry "Pocket MBA" program. I have always believed that it is important for every dentist to understand that he or she runs not just a dental practice but also a small business. Now is an excellent time to reinforce your dental knowledge and get ready to return to business better than before, and this program (and the price for it) could be the genesis for that growth.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay on top of your game. Thanks for reading DrBicuspid.com.
