Robert Redfield, MD, has been named as the new director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by Alex Azar II, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Dr. Redfield served most recently as the co-founder and associate director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.
Previously, he spent 20 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and made important contributions into the scientific understanding of HIV, according to the HHS. Dr. Redfield was also member of the President's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS from 2005 to 2009.
Dr. Redfield replaces Brenda Fitzgerald, MD, who resigned on January 31.
