57 kids hospitalized in Calif. water line infection case

The number of children who have been hospitalized for dental infections after having pulpotomies at a Southern California dental clinic has risen to 57, according to an Orange County Register story.

The children had pulpotomies at the Children's Dental Group in Anaheim, CA, between March 14, 2016, and August 5, 2016, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency. Health officials have traced the infection to the clinic's water lines, and the state dental board is investigating possible breaches of infection-control protocols.

Water testing at the clinic found five samples positive for Mycobacterium chelonae/abscessus, according to the October 25 story. A new water system will be installed by October 31, 2016, the clinic said.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted to give Children's Hospital of Orange County $150,000 in county funds to treat the children's infections.
