More than a dozen U.S. states routinely conduct inspections of dental offices to ensure compliance with infection-control regulations. Will South Carolina soon join the list?

State Sen. Harvey Peeler is urging the South Carolina Legislature to consider requiring routine inspections of dental and other medical offices. However, some of his colleagues question the necessity of adding another layer of bureaucracy. Read more.

Peeler may be on to something: U.S. dental practices are falling short in their compliance with and implementation of federal infection-control guidelines, according to a study in the current Journal of the American Dental Association.
