For now, a delivery of sodium fluoride, which is added to public drinking water to fend off tooth decay, has prevented a New Hampshire city from halting the fluoridation of its water system.
The City of Dover will continue to fluoridate the water until it runs out of fluoride, Dr. David Staples, a member of the city's board of health, said.
Shortly after the city announced in July that it would cease adding fluoride to its water system for several months due to a U.S. shortage of the compound, it received a delivery.
If it had not received the fluoride, some areas in Madbury, Rollinsford, and Somersworth, which also are part of Dover's water system, also would have been affected.
