Week in Review: Did this dentist make a huge discovery? | Oral lesions and PDT | Time to push oral health

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Since the start of the new year, some very interesting research has come to light, and I'm thrilled we were able to share some of it this past week with DrBicuspid.com readers.

Let's start with a dentist who believes he has made a big discovery in the connection between oral health and COVID-19. Sores and bleeding gums in the healthy mouths of two teenage siblings may have led to a longtime Maryland dentist diagnosing the first asymptomatic cases of SARS-CoV-2 from oral lesions during a routine dental visit. Dr. Gary Bauman's findings and photos are fascinating, and this article is well worth your time to read this weekend, I believe.

Speaking of COVID-19 and oral lesions, photodynamic therapy (PDT) may be an effective option for treating oral lesions in patients diagnosed with COVID-19, according to a group of researchers. This article drew a lot of attention this past week, and the timing of it with Dr. Bauman's findings is remarkable.

The pandemic has certainly brought the importance of oral health to the forefront. With a new administration in place, is now the time to ensure that oral health is a priority on the national level as well? Vivian Vasallo, executive director of the Delta Dental Institute, is on a quest to ensure that dentistry plays a larger role when it comes to President Joe Biden's vision of healthcare and where he and his medical colleagues believe it is going during his administration. I recently talked with her about why this matters so much and what it could mean for the industry.

As vaccinations start to ramp up across the U.S., an interesting study has come out about which states are the safest when it comes to COVID-19. Which states landed at the top and bottom of that list? You might be surprised.

Finally, let's look at how the pandemic has affected a group of orthodontics practices in the Northeast. Dr. Oleg Drut and his Diamond Braces locations had big plans for 2020 -- and then COVID-19 hit. However, his business has successfully weathered the pandemic economy, opening six new offices and hiring 80 new staff members. How did he and his team do it? He shared his story of rebound and hope with our audience this week.

As always, thank you for being a subscriber to DrBicuspid.com. We wish you a relaxing and enjoyable weekend ahead.
