NIH grants $3.7M for immigrant kids' oral health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has granted $3.7 million to two New York organizations to improve oral health outcomes of immigrant children.

The NIH awarded the funds to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System. The two organizations will use the grant to teach 400 mothers with newborns about oral hygiene and healthy feeding practices.

The initiative specifically targets immigrants from South Asia, one of the largest growing immigrant communities in the U.S. Health workers will teach mothers in the New York City area about the risks of excessive bottle feeding and sippy cups, which can lead to early childhood caries and childhood obesity.
