The ADA has launched a holiday campaign with ADA President Carol Summerhays, DDS, and Hermey the Elf (from the Rudolph holiday television specials) to address poor oral health behaviors during the holidays.
The campaign is titled "Happy and Healthy Holiday Tips."
In 2014, the ADA granted Hermey a dental do gooder (DDG) certificate for his passion for dentistry and dedication to helping others.
The ADA offered tips you can share with your patients:
- Have a routine. Hermey always brushes his teeth twice a day, for two minutes, and everyone should too.
- Use a fluoride toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
- Choose carrots. Suggest to your patients that they take a cue from Rudolph and eat carrots.
- Don't forget to visit your dentist in December.
- Drink water. Avoid drinking sodas, sports drinks, and juices with lots of sugar. Instead, drink fluoridated water to keep teeth strong and healthy.
- Protect your teeth. Wear a mouthguard whenever playing sports this winter.
