UNM awarded $2.5M for special needs dentistry

The department of dental medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine was awarded a $2.5 million grant for its special need dental clinic, according to a UNM news article.

The five-year grant, which was awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), will be used to create additional educational and clinical opportunities. Specifically, it will fund a special needs coordinator and create a second-year dental residency curriculum.

"With this support from HRSA, we will coordinate an educational program for community dentists in New Mexico in areas of special needs dentistry to provide intellectually and developmentally disabled patients in the state of New Mexico more qualified oral health providers," stated Vicki Pizanis, RDH, principal investigator for the grant, in the news article.
