NDA supports new workforce models

The National Dental Association (NDA) is officially supporting emerging workforce models in the U.S., according to a statement released on July 23.

The association's official policy supports expanded functions for dental hygienists and assistants, as well as dental therapists when appropriate.

"The current dental delivery system is outdated and no longer works for a third of the nation. That means that many people are constantly living in significant pain," stated Carrie Brown, DMD, president of the NDA, in a press release. "It is time to create a system that embraces team-based care, and where a range of providers can work together efficiently to provide cost-effective, high-quality dental care to call. NDA is proud to lead this effort in our communities."

The statement is reflective of the interests of the association, which is comprised of African-American dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental students in 35 state and local chapters. Almost 60% of NDA members said that they would hire additional types of dental providers, including dental therapists, if their state provided credentials.

"We view access to dental care as a matter of social justice," Dr. Brown stated. "Despite advances in healthcare and technology, glaring disparities exist among underserved, vulnerable, and diverse populations. We must explore strategies to eliminate these disparities and improve oral health, including expanding the dental workforce."
