The Journal of Dental Research has published standards for use in artificial intelligence (AI) studies in the dental and oral sciences, according to the International Association for Dental Research.
The guidelines build on the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement, which provides evidence-based recommendations for reporting of randomized controlled trials. The new CONSORT-AI extension specifically addresses issues relating to the use of AI in clinical trials.
German researchers who developed the CONSORT-AI extension suggested the standards were needed because AI studies are low quality and reporting is often insufficient to fully comprehend and possibly replicate the work.
