Air Techniques' Spectra device led the caries detection aid category in dollar sales with a 2010 market share of almost 50%, according to the company.
In addition, in the fourth quarter of 2010, Spectra for the first time also led the category in units sold, and it set a record with a dollar market share of more than 60%, according to Laura Walsh, Air Techniques marketing manager.
Walsh attributed much of the growth to positive reviews from independent product evaluations.
Using fluorescence technology, Spectra emits high-energy LED light onto the tooth surface to detect the existence and extent of any decay, calculus, or plaque.
