A health planning agency in Western Michigan is considering a request for a dental CT scanner from a Mecosta County dental practice. If approved, it would become the seventh dental CT scanner in use in Western Michigan, according to a story in the Michigan Business Review.
On January 20, the Alliance for Health of Western Michigan will decide whether to recommend that the state approve a certificate of need for a $185,000 digital CT scanner for Preference Dental practice in Mecosta.
In 2009, 12 dental CT scanners were operating in the state, based on information from the Michigan Department of Community Health, which grants certificates of need for the devices.
State standards require applicants to show they can perform a minimum of 200 scans in the first year, the Review noted. The average charge is about $150 per scan. Because the machines can cost between $150,000 and $250,000, there is a concern dentists could be focused on recouping their investment, Alliance for Health President Lody Zwarensteyn said.
