Patterson Companies saw a 5% increase in sales in its largest business, Patterson Dental Supply, during the second quarter of fiscal 2011 (end-October 30, 2010).
For the quarter, the dental unit reported sales of $563 million, up $26 million from sales of $537 million in the corresponding year-earlier period.
Dental supplies and printed office products were up by 1% from last year's figures, while software and dental equipment rose 14% from last year's mark. The double-digit increase in the latter products was attributed to robust sales of Cerec dental restoration systems and digital imaging products.
Scott P. Anderson, president and CEO, said the growth was a result of an effort by the company to portray increased productivity enabled by Patterson equipment with new technology. New unit sales of the Cerec were up by 50% from the previous year, and Anderson anticipates that Cerec sales will rise by 10% or more for the full year.
Overall for the quarter, Patterson Companies reported sales of $857 million, a 5% increase over sales of $815 million for the same quarter a year ago. Net income was $53 million, up 8% over net income of $49 million in the previous year's second quarter.
