S-Ray closed a $3.5 million funding round that will help it gain FDA marketing clearance for its ultrasonography system for dentistry, the company said.
CEO Steve Baird formed S-Ray in January 2008 to pursue ultrasound as an alternative to radiographs for detecting cracks and caries in teeth, according to a story in the Portland Business Journal. The company is working to commercialize technology created by Ken Johnson, a Corvallis, OR, dentist, and Dan Tingley, a Canadian timber engineer who happened to visit Johnson's office with a toothache and didn't want to be exposed to radiation.
The S-Ray device produces 3D images by generating an ultrasound pulse or sound wave from a transducer that is received by a second transducer. The data is captured and sent to a computer for interpretation, rendering it into a 3D image that is presented on a display monitor. S-Ray is able to differentiate between healthy dentin and caries, according to the company.
