The Institut National d'Optique (INO), Canada's largest centre for industrial optics and photonics expertise, has signed a $670,000 partnership deal with Quantum Dental Technologies to help commercialize Quantum's Canary dental caries detection system.
INO has been tasked with producing a market-ready version of Quantum's Canary system. The Canary combines luminescence and infrared technologies to enable early detection of tooth decay, according to Quantum.
"We chose INO for four reasons," said Quantum CEO Stephen Abrams in a press release. "First, they have an extensive base in optics and infrared and a thorough understanding of engineering. Second, they have a track record developing applications in medicine and dentistry. Third, they've got a top-notch team of seasoned professionals, based in Canada. And fourth, if they can produce infrared gun sights for the Canadian military, you can bet they'll do the job for us, too."
Working in close collaboration with Quantum, the INO project team has already incorporated significant improvements into the Canary system, including a handpiece-mounted visible-range camera and data acquisition technology that converts combined the luminescence and infrared measurement data into visual output, the company noted.
