Q: I would like to have a camera attached to my loupes so I can record some of the procedures that I do. Where can I buy such a product?

A: What you are looking for is a point-of-view (POV) camera. The camera can be mounted to a headband or attached to the side of your loupes. Many POV cameras are available on the market for less than $750, but the optics are not set up to record dental procedures. More expensive high-definition POV cameras are also available, but the price tag goes way up.

Other options include external digital surgical microscopes, such as the CamSight Digital Surgical Scope or the MagnaVu by Magnified Video Dentistry, or conventional microscopes with a video camera attached. Live video can be recorded onto a VCR or DVD recorder, or saved to a PC. You can record images or procedures for liability purposes, patient communication, or as a teaching tool.

To see a video of a digital surgical microscope recording a procedure, visit the CamSight Web site.
