The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) released a statement opposing the 2018 budget proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on March 16.
In particular, the AADR condemned the president's plan to cut $5.8 billion in funding from the National Institutes of Health, which houses the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Between 2005 and 2014, the NIDCR provided $1.2 billion in awards to U.S. dental schools and institutions, and the AADR stated the dental community and the public rely on research funded by the NIDCR.
The proposed budget would also cut $15 billion from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The cuts would help to offset a $54 billion increase in defense spending and a $4 billion increase to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
