The FDI World Dental Federation has launched a new definition of oral health as an integral part of general health and well-being.
As defined by the FDI, oral health will include the ability to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, and swallow, while also being able to express emotions through facial expressions with confidence and without pain.
The announcement was made at the group's annual meeting on September 6 in Poznan, Poland. The definition was adopted by more than 200 national dental associations, according to the FDI.
The federation represents more than 1 million dentists worldwide and includes 200 national member associations and specialist groups in more than 130 countries.
