Last month, Shane Anderson of Lakeland, FL, and more than 800 people from across the U.S. entered DentalPlans.com's Grant a Dental Wish Facebook contest by sharing their dental care stories for the chance to win $2,012 toward dental work this year.
Anderson's story about his sister, 19-year-old Kayla, was voted by Facebook fans as the most deserving of the money. Two runners-up also won a free discount dental plan to save 10% to 60% on most dental care procedures at a selection of more than 100,000 dentists nationwide.
Kayla, who suffered from multiple infections and broken teeth in 2011, has a medical condition that causes her body to produce abnormally low levels of calcium, creating an increase in dental caries.
"My dental wish is for my sister," Anderson wrote in his contest entry. "The pain that she is enduring often makes it impossible for her to eat. We have been to the emergency room numerous times. But they cannot do anything for her, and the free insurance she has does not cover dental work."
Kayla's road to dental care recovery begins this month when she will meet with James Hancock, DDS, to begin treatment. She will also use a discount dental plan, included with her prize, to save money on her dental work.
