A 91-year-old U.K. dentist who won a bronze medal during the 1950 British Empire Games has been selected as a torchbearer for the 2012 London Summer Olympics, according to an article on Dentistry.co.uk.
Tony Chivers, MBE, was nominated by the Benevolent Fund charity, where he is a former chairman. Dr. Chivers was selected from tens of thousands of nominees to fill one of the 8,000 torchbearer positions who will carry the torch across the U.K.
The accomplished dentist served in the Royal Air Force during World War II and subsequently opened his own practice in Hampshire, the article noted. He earned a bronze medal in the 3-mile run competition at the Empire Games in Auckland, New Zealand. His services to dentistry earned him a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) award in 1996.
Earlier in 2011, he completed a 100-mile rowing challenge in support of the Ben Fund and the Dentist's Health Support Trust, donating about $6.21 per mile rowed with the aid of other donors.
