Ga. board mulls hygienist rule change; iPhone app links dentists with labs

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

In a meeting September 9, the Georgia Board of Dentistry rejected as written a proposal that would have required public health hygienists to be under the direct supervision of a dentist when they provide basic preventive services in schools, community health centers, and prisons.

The proposal -- which the board will consider again within 90 days -- has sparked concern and comment from the state dental association, the state dental hygienists' association, and the Federal Trade Commission. Click here to read more, or go to the Practice Management Community.

Meanwhile, in Cosmetics Community news, two U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panels are recommending that the agency consider putting limits on how long patients can take bisphosphonate drugs such as Fosamax for their osteoporosis. The panels met September 9 as part of the FDA's ongoing review of the potential risks associated with bisphosphonate use, including increased fractures and higher rates of esophageal cancer.

Finally, in Imaging & CAD/CAM Community news, a Canadian company has developed an app for the iPhone and iPad that enables dental offices to email their prescriptions and photos directly to the dental lab of their choice. Read more.
