The U.S. Senate Budget Committee's budget resolution would increase funding for some programs affecting dentistry, including health professions training, community health centers, and the National Institutes of Health, according to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).
The Budget Committee's resolution doesn't have the force of law, but it serves as guidelines for other committees as they draft legislation on appropriations, taxes, and authorizations, the AGD said.
Since the committee has called for a freeze on "nonsecurity" discretionary spending from fiscal year 2011 through fiscal year 2013, its decision to reserve funding for the health-related programs is significant, the according to the academy. "This increase bodes well for these areas as Congress begins the appropriations process," the AGD said.
