John Linder, D.D.S. (R-GA), one of only two dentists presently serving in the U.S. Congress, has announced that he will not seek re-election in November. Elected in 1992, Dr. Linder "has been a stalwart advocate for dentists and dental patients," according to the ADA.
In the most recent positions on dental issues described on his Web site, Dr. Linder opposed legislation last month that would require dentists to warn patients of risks in amalgam fillings. However, contrary to the ADA position, he also opposed legislation that would subject insurance companies to federal antitrust regulation.
Dr. Linder's retirement will leave Mike Simpson, D.D.S. (R-ID), the sole dentist in Congress.
