Dental programs would get boost in Obama budget

In a detailed analysis of U.S. President Barack Obama's proposed budget for fiscal 2011, the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) found that many oral health programs would get a boost.

  • General and pediatric dentistry training programs under the Title VII Health Professions Program would get a combined $15.2 million. This is not an increase over fiscal year 2010, but is 50% more than in 2009, the AGD said.
  • The State Oral Health Workforce program authorized by the Dental Health Improvement Act would get $17.5 million. This, too, matches the 2010 level, but is $7.5 million more than in 2009, the AGD said.
  • Part F Dental Reimbursement component of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program would get $15.4 million, a $1.8 million increase over 2010.
  • The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research would get $423 million, a $10 million increase over current levels.
  • The Dental Public Health Residency Training Program under Title VII would receive $332,00.
  • The Oral Health Set-Aside under the Maternal and Child Health Block Grant would receive $4.9 million.
  • The Faculty Loan Repayment Program under Title VII would receive $1.3 million.

One program would be cut under the proposed budget, the AGD said: the Oral Public Health Programs funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These programs, which provide oral health surveillance, infrastructure support, fluoridation, and school-based sealant programs would receive $14.6 million, a cut of $393,000.
