Danville, KY, dentist Corky Deaton, DMD, recently returned from the Dominican Republic where he helped identify the bodies of 54 United Nations (U.N.) workers killed in the Haiti earthquake, according to a story in the Advocate-Messenger.
Dr. Deaton, who has been a licensed forensic odontologist since 1992, is employed by Kenyon, an international disaster relief company.
"When Kenyon first notified me, I assumed I was going to be sent to Port-au-Prince in Haiti to assist in body identifications there, but I ended up in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic," he told the Advocate-Messenger. "Kenyon got a contract with the U.N. to identify the bodies of its workers who had died when the compound in Port-au-Prince was destroyed, and their bodies were brought to Santo Domingo."
Dr. Deaton said he used dental records to identify 31 of the 54 bodies his team processed during his time there, and he may be returning to provide additional help.
"I have been told that I may be called back," he told the Advocate-Messenger. "Although it would mean essentially closing down my [dental] practice again, I will do what needs to be done."
