Summa Health System in Akron, OH, has received $140,000 in grants to help subsidize and expand its dental program, according to a news story in the Akron Beacon Journal.
The Summa Center for Dental Health is a hospital-based dental clinic and residency program where about 40% of the patients are uninsured and receive care for a sliding-scale fee based on their income, said Marvin D. Cohen, D.D.S., an Akron-area dentist and director of Summa's dental residency program, in the story. Another 52% are covered by Medicaid.
"Before we started our program, that's 8,000 people who probably wouldn't have received any dental care," Dr. Cohen said in the story. "The majority of our patient population does not receive regular dental care."
The center also serves as a training ground for dental school graduates.
The grant came from the following organizations:
