Crosstex International has launched a new face mask treated with Biosafe antimicrobial, which it says kills funguses, bacteria, and some viruses on contact.
Crosstex is still preparing an application for FDA clearance in the U.S. but is selling the mask in other markets through Cantel's subsidiary, Crosstex International.
Biosafe, manufactured by a company of the same name, bonds to the face masks. The company gives this explanation for its mechanism of action: A silane base is anchored to the substrate with covalent bonds. Positively charged nitrogen on the molecule attracts the negatively charged membranes of the microbes. A long molecular chain acts as a sword that pierces the membrane, damaging it. The negative charge further "electrocutes" the organism. Because nothing is transferred into the microbe, the risk of it developing resistance is reduced.
The face masks "have been proven to be effective against influenza A strains, such as seasonal flu and the novel H1N1 virus," according to Crosstex.
Biosafe is marketing the keyboard covers treated with the antimicrobial and pursuing partnerships with makers of other healthcare products.
