Active duty service members without access to a U.S. Department of Defense dental treatment facility (DTF) will now see civilian dentists under a new Active Duty Dental Program administered by United Concordia.
Previously, claims and referrals for these personnel were handled by the department's Military Medical Support Office. The change took place August 1, and no enrollment is required.
Active duty personnel who live or work within 50 miles of a DTF will continue to be seen at that facility. However, these service members may also see civilian dentists through the new program when referred to a specialist or when timely DTF appointments aren't available.
"United Concordia will establish an extensive dental provider network covering the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands," said Navy Capt. Robert Mitton, D.D.S., M.P.H., M.B.A., the department's dental program director.
