Komet USA is launching its first sonic handpiece, the SF1LM, the company announced this week. The company is also releasing two new Sonic Tips for finishing crown cores that are made to work with the handpiece.
When used in combination with the SF1LM sonic handpiece, Komet's Sonic Tips are less likely than conventional tips to injure the patient's gums, even if direct contact occurs, the company said.
The SF1LM also features a built-in halogen light and three power settings. It weighs 2.86 ounces and works at a frequency of 6 kHz. During the prepping stage, a supply of spray cooling (at least 30-60 mL/min) is released.
The new Sonic Tips (SF8878KD.000.018 [distal] and SF8878KM.000.018 [mesial]) are for interproximal positioning and finishing. They were developed with the advice of Hüsamettin Günay, a professor at Hanover University, Germany, the company said. The tips were also designed in collaboration with Domenico Massironi of Milan, Italy, to match their corresponding rotary instruments, Komet noted. However, the working parts of the tips are not symmetrical, but cut in half lengthwise. The advantage of this design is that it cannot damage neighboring teeth, according to the company.
