Texas dentist investigated after patient's death

A Bridge City, TX, general dentist may face a lawsuit because his patient died after a tooth extraction.

The patient, Donna Carter, was hospitalized with vomiting and bleeding after Shannon M. Messer, D.D.S., extracted her tooth on August 7, 2007, according to the Southeast Texas Record, which cited court documents.

Following a diagnosis of sepsis at Renaissance Hospital, Carter died of cardiac arrest on August 11, 2007, the newspaper reported.

On November 12 of this year, on behalf of Carter, Peggy Womack "filed a petition to investigate for a potential lawsuit" and petitioned for medical records and Dr. Messer's testimony, according to the Southeast Texas Record.
