PA dentists can't date patients; Christensen 'embarrassed' by U.S. dentistry

New state regulations in Pennsylvania and Minnesota have some dental practitioners up in arms.

In Pennsylvania, "sexual misconduct" is taking on a whole new meaning under a rule change just approved by the state dental board. The regulations state that dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants who date their patients could face disciplinary action. The Pennsylvania Dental Association says the rules are "onerous" and will hurt the recruitment of practitioners to a state that is already suffering a shortage. Read more.

In Minnesota, a health task force comprising dentists, hygienists, and academics is drafting regulations for a new class of oral health workers after a May law mandated the creation of an oral health practitioner job classification in the state by January 1, 2011. Earlier legislation had the state dental association concerned for patient safety, but it's too soon to tell what the new task force will come up with. Read more.
