A Brooklyn dentist who claimed to have placed 52 restorations in one patient visit pleaded guilty to Medicaid fraud last week, according to the Kings County District Attorney's office.
Mohinder Mayell, D.D.S., dubbed the "serial driller" by the New York Post newspaper, agreed to pay $75,000 in restitution, surrender his dental license, and never again practice in New York, the district attorney's office said in a press release. Dr. Mayell could not be reached for comment.
"This dentist tried to charge the state for filling 52 teeth in one mouth in one day. Then he told our auditors that it took him just an hour or two to complete all 52 fillings," said State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
The comptroller, which audited Dr. Mayell, said he also claimed to have performed more than 100 other dental procedures on each of eight Medicaid recipients between April 2003 and March 2008.
The comptroller cited 96 other instances in which Mayell claimed without evidence to have provided Medicaid recipients with 24 or more fillings in a single visit.
