Henry Schein and E4D Technologies -- formerly D4D -- are showcasing the new E4D NEVO scanner and Design Center at the Business of Dentistry Conference in Las Vegas this week.

The conference, which runs through August 10, is the largest in the six-year history of the event, attracting more than 1,200 dental industry professionals, up from 800 last year, according to Schein.

Business of Dentistry attendees will get first professional exhibition of the E4D NEVO (Natural Evolution) system, which is expected to begin shipping in September for customers in the U.S. and Canada, and later this year for those in Australia and New Zealand. Henry Schein is the exclusive distributor of the E4D products in those countries. The full system -- which includes a laptop, the scanner, and a mill, plus three days of training -- will sell for $119,000. Existing E4D customers can upgrade to the NEVO system for $15,000.

Gary Severance, DDS, vice president of marketing and clinical affairs at E4D Technologies, discusses the company's recent name change and new digital impressioning system, the E4D NEVO.

The NEVO scanner incorporates the company's many years of experience with powder-free intraoral image capture and is the first to use E4D's patent-pending blue-laser technology rather than a red laser, according to Gary Severance, DDS, vice president of marketing and clinical affairs for E4D. The lower-wavelength blue diode laser yields higher-resolution images, he noted.

The E4D NEVO scanner works in conjunction with the laptop-based NEVO Design Center, which uses Thunderbolt technology to increase the bandwidth of USB 3.0 connections and optimize the system's plug-and-play capabilities. Users can move the E4D NEVO from operatory to operatory, or even between multiple offices, while remaining wirelessly connected to the milling center -- all without the need for a cart.

"With a cart system, as soon as you put down the wand, you can't do anything more with the scanner," Dr. Severance said. "But with this system, even if you upgrade your cart or go to a laptop, there is no downtime."

Attendees of the Business of Dentistry conference will be able to test-drive the NEVO system both on the show floor at the Las Vegas Institute, he added.
