EPA eyes amalgam waste; FDA issues mouthwash warnings

U.S. federal agencies issued alerts this week regarding two key dental products: amalgam and mouthwash.

On Monday the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its intentions to regulate dental amalgam waste with a new rule that will require all U.S. dental practices to separate the mercury from their amalgam waste prior to disposal. The rule, which the agency intends to propose next year, already has the dental community up in arms. Read more in our latest Restoratives Community feature.

And on Tuesday the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that it had sent warning letters to three major U.S. companies -- Johnson & Johnson, Walgreen, and CVS -- telling them to stop promoting certain mouthwash products with claims that the products remove plaque above the gum line or promote healthy gums.
