Two ultrasound companies join forces

Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite has signed an agreement to purchase privately held ultrahigh-frequency microultrasound technology developer VisualSonics for $7.1 million in cash and debt.

VisualSonics' microultrasound technology enables the imaging of extremely superficial structures at 40 microns. SonoSite envisions the technology being used in a wide array of clinical markets and applications, including diagnostic radiology, tissue regeneration, and clinical disease management.

"VisualSonics has developed potentially game-changing ultrasound technology that breaks conventional barriers for visualizing superficial soft tissue," said Kevin Goodwin, SonoSite president and CEO. "Our intention is to integrate VisualSonics' microultrasound technology with SonoSite's miniaturization competency and user design to deliver ultrahigh-frequency microultrasound into clinical medicine."
