Australian authorities have issued a recall of two teeth-whitening products manufactured by Pro-Teeth Whitening: the Bright White Express Advanced teeth whitening kit and the Pro-Teeth Whitening Professional teeth whitening pen.
The products contain more hydrogen peroxide than the 6% safe limit, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
Since last year, the ACCC has recalled more than 20 teeth-whitening products from eight suppliers because the products contained unsafe levels of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.
"DIY [do-it-yourself] teeth-whitening kits have grown in popularity, but kits with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide may cause painful injuries to a user's mouth and gums, including sensitive teeth and chemical burns," said David Bradbury, parliamentary secretary to the treasurer, in a press release.
The Australian Dental Association also has reported that dentists are seeing an increasing number of patients presenting with mouth injuries attributed to home teeth bleaching, and some cases have also been treated in emergency departments of hospitals, Bradbury noted.
"Poisons information centers in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria have received a combined total of at least 58 reports of injuries involving teeth whiteners since 2004," he stated.
