New products light up CDA meeting; ClearCorrect countersues Align

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

We attended the California Dental Association (CDA) spring meeting in Anaheim last week, and not only was the weather an inspiration, so was the number of new products launched during the meeting.

From new digital imaging systems and revamped CAD/CAM software to cancer screening devices, a plaque-blocking oral rinse, and a new, "purer" form of articaine, the 26,000-plus attendees at the CDA meeting were treated to a variety of innovative technologies that can aid their practice and delivery of care.

In other news, another patent infringement battle is heating up. In March, Align Technology sued ClearCorrect, claiming that ClearCorrect's technology is infringing on eight Align patents. Now ClearCorrect has countersued Align Technology, denying that it is infringing on Align's patents and also asking the court to declare all 408 claims in 10 of Align's patents invalid. And over in the Practice Management Community, while U.S. dental practices have been exempted from the so-called Red Flags identity-theft law, there are other components of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 that still apply to dental offices, and failure to comply comes with some potentially stiff penalties.
