AACD survey ranks top celebrity smiles

All that glitters on the Oscar red carpet is not gold when it comes to celebrity smiles, according to a new survey of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD).

How did top Oscar nominees fare in this battle of the smiles? "Black Swan" diva Natalie Portman swept the field, with 91% of cosmetic dentists surveyed ranking her smile No. 1 among other nominees in the Best Actor/Actress in a Leading and Supporting Role categories.

Not far behind was James Franco, star of "127 Hours," who took the runner-up spot with 82% of votes. But Christian Bale, nominated for his role in "The Fighter," had a weak smile performance, with only 26% of the vote.

Here's the overall ranking for best Oscar nominee smiles, according to the AACD:

  1. Natalie Portman
  2. James Franco
  3. Nicole Kidman
  4. Annette Bening
  5. Colin Firth
  6. Christian Bale

And which Hollywood female celebrity has the most kissable mouth? AACD member dentists say Angelina Jolie wins hands down. Natalie Portman came in second, followed by a close third-place tie between Halle Berry and Julia Roberts.

As for the most kissable men, Golden Globe nominee Jake Gyllenhaal beat out perennial favorites Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Denzel Washington.

Beyond Oscar nominees, AACD dentists weighed in on which high-profile celebrities, sports figures, and politicians they would love to get in their chair. Cosmetic dentists were asked: Whose smile needs improvement and which procedure would you recommend?

Among the men, Tom Cruise topped the list with the most cosmetic dentists writing in that they would love to see a total cosmetic redo using the latest orthodontic and veneer technologies. Retired New York Giants defensive end and NFL commentator Michael Strahan came in second with his noticeable diastema that dentists say they would love to correct.

Former President George W. Bush took third place with cosmetic dentists noting that he's in need of a complete cosmetic dentistry rework, including whitening, splint therapy, bonding, and veneers.

Among the women, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric tied for first place for smile makeovers, according to AACD dentists. Survey respondents said they could both use specific cosmetic work to enhance their looks for TV and personal appearances. They suggested that Clinton could benefit from crowns and veneers, while Couric could use a "smile lift."

Honorable mentions included performer Miley Cyrus and author and lawyer Caroline Kennedy (crown lengthening), former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and actress Jennifer Garner (veneers), and singer-songwriter Jewel (orthodontics and whitening).
