Jones Foundation supports orthodontic program

The Walter S. and Evan C. Jones Foundation has joined Smiles Change Lives (SCL), a national nonprofit organization, to help low-income Kansas children get orthodontic work.

Youths ages 11 to 18 in Coffey, Lyon, and Osage Counties in Kansas are being sought for its affordable orthodontic program, the organization announced.

The Jones Foundation has provided financial support to children in these counties who cannot afford braces. SCL is now the administrative agent for the Jones Foundation and is encouraging families to begin applying to the program for assistance in obtaining orthodontic treatment.

To help reward those who refer children and families to the program, SCL has created a contest that runs through Friday, January 14, 2011. Prizes range from $100 to $500 for the person or organization that refers the most applicants to SCL.

Smiles Change Lives and the Jones Foundation serve:

  • Children with crooked teeth and/or misaligned jaws, who are not already wearing braces
  • Children whose documented family income is at or below 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines
  • Families willing to pay a $25 nonrefundable application fee and, if approved, a $500 program fee
  • Motivated youth with documented good oral hygiene

Many of the organization's 370 orthodontic providers have immediate openings for approved SCL patients. Oral health professionals, parents, teachers, and nurses may download an application at smileschangelives.org or call 816-421-4949 to obtain an application and other program materials by mail.
