New Zealand seeks warnings on teeth whiteners

The Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) of New Zealand is seeking comments on proposed changes to the rules on the use of hydrogen peroxide as a teeth whitener.

Dental products are regulated by ERMA under Dental Products Group Standards. The Dental Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Heath have requested amendments to two of the group standards concerning use of hydrogen peroxide as a dental whitener.

ERMA New Zealand is recommending that a warning be included on a package insert with over-the-counter teeth whiteners containing or releasing 0.1% to 3.6% hydrogen peroxide. It also recommends that products containing or releasing more than 3.6% hydrogen peroxide no longer be sold over the counter, but only be available under the direction of a qualified dentist. A package insert stating this restriction is also proposed.
