Two Michigan women have started a charity aimed at helping local needy children obtain braces, according to an article in the Saginaw News. Braces for God's Faces was started by Laura Putnam and Mary Lenhart to benefit Saginaw County children whose parents are unable to afford orthodontics.
They hope to partner with the Michigan Dental Association and local orthodontists and dentists. Bobby J. Jones, D.D.S., of Essexville, MI, has been the first to sign on after a chance meeting on the day of the ladies' first fundraiser in which they raised $700. Plans are in the works for the women to host another event where locally made crafts and products are sold.
Putnam was inspired to do more to help her community after surviving a severe accident with a tractor trailer on her way to work in 2004. Years later, Putnam noticed a dramatic change in her friend's daughter after the girl received braces and drew upon the experience as inspiration to form the charity. The organization aims to bring a grant writer on board and is offering a family recipe to those who make donation of $3 to $5.
